Home and Property Insurance

Home insurance (or property insurance) protects you from insured events that can damage your home. For example, if your home is damaged or destroyed in a fire, having the right insurance could mean the insurance provider will pay to replace your belongings and repair or rebuild your home.

Different types of home and property insurance

Home and property insurance consists of buildings insurance and contents insurance, which can be bought separately or together from the same provider.

Buildings insurance – covers the structure of the building and the fixed fittings inside. It protects your building from fire, flood, storms, falling trees or vandalism. It may also cover  things like subsidence, water damage and burst pipes.

Contents insurance  – covers your possessions placed inside your home and/or property, like furniture, clothes, electric devices, like computers, and even carpets or curtains.

There are some exceptions, so always check your policy to see what’s included in the definition of “structure and fittings” and ‘contents’.

What is not covered?

Home and property insurance usually does not cover:

  • Termites and insect damage, bird or rodent damage, rust, rot, mold;
  • General wear and tear;
  • Damage caused by smog or smoke from industrial or agricultural operations;
  • Hidden defects;
  • Damage caused by war or nuclear hazard;
  • Expenses incurred due to identity theft
